MtnHermit Posted November 20, I have had trouble using the dashboard. What does this look like? Posted November 21, Posted November 21, edited. However, I am still having trouble with the "Geocaching" dashboard. It is really weird Here is what I mean: Isn't that crazy? It is easy to fix - simply pressing the MENU button and then QUIT redraws the map, and then it looks nice: In addition to this problem, I think that the map redraws even when not trying to navigate to anything with the Geocaching dashboard displayed are slower than with any other dashboard or with other data fields displayed.
The problems documented above do NOT occur when using the Geocaching - Detail dashboard: Also, I have verified something that I haven't had much experience with, but is confirmed in other threads. Example: In the screen shots above, I'm not navigating to the closest geocache, but the dashboard gives me the info I need.
Then I get good and useful information: Hope this helps someone! Edited November 21, by Team Periwinkle. Anyway: When navigating to a waypoint not a cache , both Geocaching dashboards display the title, bearing, and distance to the closest cache, NOT the bearing, distance and title of the waypoint. An FYI We shall see what happens!
In the screen shots above, it is "54 hr 38 min". Posted November 24, Used the 62s for a couple days over the holidays Upload waypoints, routes, and tracks to your GPS and print a matching map out to take with you into the field. Once you reach that limit, your GPS can't hold any more data. They can then download as much data as possible onto their GPS leaving some room for GPS data collection out in the field. When they get back, they use ExpertGPS to upload all of their Garmin waypoints, routes, and tracks onto their computer and save it.
Once they've backed up the new data from their GPS, they can clear the memory again, keeping their GPS ready for their next trip. These are actual scale topographic maps from the US Geological Survey, giving you much more terrain detail than the maps that came with your Garmin.
This ability to toggle back-and-forth between several views of your GPS data is unique to ExpertGPS, and is one of its most popular features. ExpertGPS comes preloaded with all the line patterns and cartographic styles you need to draw highways, railroad tracks, transmission lines, streams, and more.
And the waypoint and track style editors let you create your own map symbols, change track colors, and customize exactly how your GPS and map data is drawn. ExpertGPS can do it 5x faster! ExpertGPS allows you to calculate acreage in three different ways : 1.
Calculate area by walking a perimeter with your GPS. Calculate area by marking GPS waypoints at the corners of a field or parcel. In ExpertGPS, connect those waypoints into a route, and the acreage is automatically calculated. Calculate area by tracing over a map or aerial photo. Think about it:. The Oregon and Colorado screens are 38mm x 63mm. Physically, the difference is not great, but the Oregon and Colorado have a much higher pixel density.
The Oregon screen has two and a half times as many pixels in its display. Like the Oregon and Colorado, the 62s can display 65, colours, compared to the of the 60CSx. This difference in the pixel density is hard to convey on a computer screen. The first image below is a screen capture from an Oregon. The second is from a 62s and has been enlarged to reflect the relative physical size of the screens on the two units. On your computer screen, these images will be bigger than on the actual GPS.
Oregon Map Screen Capture. However, don't let that put you off the 62s as the mapping is quite usable.
The GPS worked fine in all the lighting conditions that we tried. In bright light, the screen was more visible than the Oregon we used for comparison. The user-interface is easy to use and learn. The 8 buttons and rocker arrow pad give you access to the GPS functions. The functions are organised into a series of pages, main menu, map, trip computer, compass etc. About 15 pages in total. These pages are accessed either from the main menu, or in a sequence of pages that are displayed when you push the PAGE button.
Main Menu Screen. Changing Pages. The Trip screen shows comprehensive information on your position and travels. The data displayed on each position on the screen can be customised. You can select the value to be shown from a large list of data like speed, distance, position etc. There is also a big print option with fewer values. This is great for use in a vehicle. Similarly, on most pages, further functions for that page are accessed by pressing the MENU button.
There are a great many options allowing you to customise the device just the way that you want it. Here are the map options. The above examples show the options for customising the map. Almost every aspect of the map display can be setup the way that you want. Text entry is servicable, but not as easy as the Oregon touch-screen. When you need to enter text for a search or a waypoint etc, a keypad pops up on the screen.
To enter text you move the yellow highlight to the next letter or number to enter, using the rocker pad. Once your entry is complete you select the "OK" button on the keypad. While the full-screen touch keypad on the Oregon is much faster to use, unless you capture a lot of waypoints, does it matter that much? There are a wide variety of maps for this unit.
