Jim butcher backup torrent

Take three guesses. And the first two don't count Magic - it can get a guy killed. Giant scorpions. Oversexed vampires. Psychotic werewolves.

All over Chicago, ghosts are causing trouble—and not just of the door-slamming, boo-shouting variety. These ghosts are tormented, violent, and deadly. Someone—or something—is purposely stirring them up to wreak unearthly havoc. But why? And why do so many of the victims have ties to Harry?

Ever since his girlfriend left town to deal with her newly acquired taste for blood, Harry Dresden has been down and out in Chicago. The only professional wizard in the phone book has become a desperate man. It seems simple enough, but Harry knows better than to get caught in the middle of faerie politics. Until he finds out that the fate of the entire world rests on his solving this case. No pressure or anything Harry Dresden, Chicago's only practicing professional wizard, should be happy that business is pretty good for a change.

But he also knows that whenever things are going good, the only way left for them to go is bad. Way bad. Such as:. Not to mention the return of Harry's ex-girlfriend Susan, who's still struggling with her semi-vampiric nature. And who seems to have a new man in her life. Some days, it just doesn't pay to get out of bed. No matter how much you're charging.

Harry Dresden has had worse assignments than going undercover on the set of an adult film. Like fleeing a burning building full of enraged demon-monkeys, for instance. Or going toe-to-leaf with a walking plant monster. Karrin Murphy is the head of S. The vampire wants the Word of Kemmler whatever that is and all the power that comes with it. Now, Harry is in a race against time—and six merciless necromancers—to find the Word before Chicago experiences a Halloween night to wake the dead But war with the vampires has thinned their ranks, so the Council has drafted Harry as a Warden and assigned him to look into rumors of black magic in the Windy City.

As Harry adjusts to his new role, another problem arrives in the form of the tattooed and pierced daughter of an old friend—all grown up and already in trouble. Her boyfriend is the only suspect in what looks like a supernatural assault straight out of a horror film. Some have vanished. Others appear to be victims of suicide. But now the culprit has left a calling card at one of the crime scenes—a message for Harry Dresden.

Harry sets out to find the apparent serial killer, but his investigation turns up evidence pointing to the one suspect he cannot possibly believe guilty: his half-brother, Thomas. And Harry knows that if he screws this one up, people will die—and one of them will be his brother For once, the future looks fairly bright.

But the past casts one hell of a long shadow. Mab, monarch of the Sidhe Winter Court, calls in an old favor from Harry. Harry's a wizard. A genuine, honest-to-goodness wizard. He'll spit in the eye of gods and demons alike if he thinks it needs to be done, and to hell with the consequences--and yet somehow my little brother manages to remain a decent human being.

So begins "Backup," a twelve thousand word novelette set in Jim Butcher s ultra-popular Dresden Files series. This time Harry's in trouble he knows nothing about, and it's up to his big brother Thomas to track him down and solve those little life-threatening difficulties without his little brother even noticing. When it comes to the magical ruling body known as the White Council, Harry is thought of as either a black sheep or a sacrificial lamb. And none hold him in more disdain than Morgan, a veteran Warden with a grudge against anyone who bends the rules.

But now, Morgan is in trouble. And a single mistake may cost someone his head. She disappeared to South America, where she could fight both her savage gift and those who cursed her with it. For the vengeful Duchess of the Red Court has discovered a secret Susan has long kept from everyone—including Harry—and she plans to use it. To prevail, Harry may have to unleash the full fury of his untapped power—and he may have no choice but to embrace the darkness within himself.

And after someone puts a bullet through his chest and leaves him to die in the waters of Lake Michigan, things really start going downhill. Trapped between life and death, he learns that his friends are in serious trouble. Only by finding his murderer can he save his friends and move on—a feat which would be a lot easier if he had a body and access to his powers. Worse still are the malevolent shadows that roam Chicago, controlled by a dark entity that wants Harry to suffer even in death.

Now, the late Harry Dresden will have to pull off the ultimate trick without using any magic—or face an eternity as just another lost soul Her word is his command.

And her first command is the seemingly impossible: kill an immortal. Worse still, there is a growing threat to an unfathomable source of magic that could mean the deaths of millions.

Beset by enemies new and old, Harry must gather his friends and allies, prevent an apocalypse, and find a way out of his eternal subservience before his newfound infinite powers claim the only thing he has left to call his own Problem is, the vault belongs to Hades, Lord of the freaking Underworld. And Dresden is dead certain that Nicodemus has no intention of allowing any of his crew to survive the experience. When the Supernatural nations of the world meet up to negotiate an end to ongoing hostilities, Harry Dresden, Chicago's only professional wizard, joins the White Council's security team to make sure the talks stay civil.

But can he succeed, when dark political manipulations threaten the very existence of Chicago—and all he holds dear? Harry has faced terrible odds before. He has a long history of fighting enemies above his weight class. The Red Court of vampires. The fallen angels of the Order of the Blackened Denarius.

The Outsiders. A being more powerful and dangerous on an order of magnitude beyond what the world has seen in a millennium is coming. Anyone who loves Harry Dresden has to read this. It's not about Harry, it's all about his brother Thomas, but Butcher has set up a brilliant Gaiman-esque premise here. What happens to the old gods if they are not remembered? What if there was a war to make people forget, thus render powerless, the bad guys? And who wouldn't love a pseudo-gay vampiric hairdresser anyway?

Synopsis : Let's get something clear right up front. Sep 07, Joan rated it really liked it Shelves: mysteries , read-in , fantasy , adult-books , magical-realism. This is a novella. Or at least I'd call it such. It is an interesting insight since it allows Butcher a chance to show how ever present the Hunger is. There is a some humor in it but not a lot.

Thomas seems intensely lonely, even lonelier than Harry in many ways. He can't have access to the woman he loves without personal harm, he can't trust his older sister Lara, he can't hang around Harry as much as either would like f This is a novella. He can't have access to the woman he loves without personal harm, he can't trust his older sister Lara, he can't hang around Harry as much as either would like for fear of the Wardens and he always has his Hunger haunting him.

Nonetheless, he tries to protect Harry, in this story. Will he succeed in protecting Harry? Read and find out! We also get introduced to Oblivion and Venators. Not a huge amount of explanation of Venators but I rather think we will see more of both Oblivion and Venators in the future. Aug 05, Diana rated it really liked it Shelves: sci-fi-fantasy-read , read-in A short story in the Dresden Files series that while has the main character in it, is told from his half brother's point of view.

I enjoyed having a story with the main character being Thomas. It's a really quick read, great for someone who has read the series but doesn't have much time to delve back into it. I loved it, but I am a huge fan of the series. If you're just starting out read book one, but if you are familiar with the series definitely look this one up. Shelves: read , urban-fantasy , mystery. In this one, Thomas is contacted by his sister, Lara, and asked to rendezvous with her representative to receive important information.

The information she brings is that Harry is in danger from an ancient evil known as the Stygian Sisterhood who want to unleash demonic forces. One of the sisters has tricked Harry into helping her, so Thomas must ride to the rescue. But he cannot reveal his presence, because that would also reveal his involvement in the centuries-old Oblivion War, a secret that no one must know. Needless to say, Thomas is keeping a few secrets. I also loved his brief but bittersweet reunion with Justine. This one barely whetted my appetite.

Jan 28, Morris Nelms rated it really liked it. If you like the Dresden Files then you'll enjoy this. I did. It's short. Takes no time to read. Some fans have said they would have felt ripped off if they'd paid full price for it. Strange criticism. It's easy to find out how long the book is, whether you buy it at a bookstore or online.

Butcher is a vivid writer, who wants to keep you interested and the tale moving. He does so consistently, and that's all in evidence here.

His trademark humor is present as well. One complaint I read was that t If you like the Dresden Files then you'll enjoy this.

One complaint I read was that the voice wasn't that different from Harry Dresden. That thought never crossed my mind while reading this. Another complaint was that Thomas worships his brother. I didn't get that either. He does admire him and considers him more noble than he is. In other words, he wishes he could be more like him.

But he's got a problem. He's a vampire, and that sort of gets in the way of being a full blown hero. I found it clever and entertaining. I'm glad I read it. Mar 26, Anne rated it really liked it Recommends it for: Harry Dresden fans.

Shelves: short-stories , read-in , mystery , jim-butcher , paranormal. It was a lot of fun to read, but extremely short! I think it only took about 45 minutes read it, and that is saying a lot when you have four little kids running under your feet. Thomas is the one telling this story, and I really enjoyed seeing everything from his perspective.

Very entertaining! Keep 'em coming! May 13, Brooke rated it really liked it Shelves: , fantasy. It was nice seeing the Dresden world from an alternate viewpoint, but I did feel like Thomas' voice wasn't all that different from Harry's. Perhaps in a regular-length novel, Butcher would have more time to develop a different feel. I still enjoyed this short story, and wouldn't mind getting to hear from other Dresden characters in between the larger novels.

Harry Dresden's half brother Thomas Raith has to help Harry on his latest case without him knowing or a demon will be loosed on the world. Good stuff but really short and awfully pricey. May 29, Alan rated it liked it Shelves: urban-fantasy.

I've been looking for this as a reasonable price, and I finally lucked into a copy. The thing is that this is really a short story, an enjoyable one, but not a novella. With the above did I just set the Goodreads record for a run sentence?

I think it's grammatically correct. The story, as stated in Butcher's preface centers on Harry Dresden's half-brother Thomas and the Oblivion War, which Butcher says he has mentioned before but I certainly don't recall it. Thomas is one of the good guys in thi I've been looking for this as a reasonable price, and I finally lucked into a copy.
